Samaria Gorge Tour
Discover the nature of the Gorge of Samaria, the second largest gorge in Europe, spanning 16 kilometers. Hidden in the southern part of the Chania district, it is a gem of the White Mountains. Starting at Ksyloskalo on the Omalos plateau at 1,227 meters altitude, the trail follows the river bed and ends at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.
The Gorge of Samaria is the most visited trail in Greece, excellently marked with signals and signs to ensure hikers do not get lost. Despite its length, the trail is comfortable and well-maintained, mostly consisting of stones and soil. This makes the hike enjoyable rather than strenuous, as evidenced by the hundreds of people who cross it daily from May to October.
One of the highlights of the hike is encountering the famous endangered Cretan goat, the “Kri-Kri.” The Gorge of Samaria offers a versatile environment with many landscape changes, making it a pleasant experience. However, hikers should be cautious during certain parts of the trek, even though the overall trail is not considered very difficult.
At the end of the gorge, you can swim in the refreshing cool waters of Agia Roumeli, a perfect reward after completing the hike. The trail’s natural beauty and well-cared-for path ensure a memorable journey through one of Crete’s most stunning landscapes.
