Samaria Gorge Tour

Discover the nature of the Gorge of Samaria, the second largest gorge in Europe, spanning 16 kilometers. Hidden in the southern part of the Chania district, it is a gem of the White Mountains. Starting at Ksyloskalo on the Omalos plateau at 1,227 meters altitude, the trail follows the river bed and ends at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.

The Gorge of Samaria is the most visited trail in Greece, excellently marked with signals and signs to ensure hikers do not get lost. Despite its length, the trail is comfortable and well-maintained, mostly consisting of stones and soil. This makes the hike enjoyable rather than strenuous, as evidenced by the hundreds of people who cross it daily from May to October.

One of the highlights of the hike is encountering the famous endangered Cretan goat, the “Kri-Kri.” The Gorge of Samaria offers a versatile environment with many landscape changes, making it a pleasant experience. However, hikers should be cautious during certain parts of the trek, even though the overall trail is not considered very difficult.

At the end of the gorge, you can swim in the refreshing cool waters of Agia Roumeli, a perfect reward after completing the hike. The trail’s natural beauty and well-cared-for path ensure a memorable journey through one of Crete’s most stunning landscapes.

Agia Irini Gorge Tour

Located on the western flank of the White Mountains in the Selino province, the Agia Irini gorge takes its name from the nearby village of Agia Irini, situated 46 km from Chania. Beginning just below the village, the trail of Agia Irini Gorge winds down to the Oasis Taverna.

This well-maintained 7.5 km path, which takes about three hours to traverse, descends roughly 500 meters and is mostly shaded by pine trees, plane trees, and oleander bushes. The gorge features a small river, though some parts can become impassable or hazardous following heavy rainfall. Part of the European footpath E4, the gorge is included in the NATURA 2000 protected areas and has been designated a wildlife reserve by the Ministry of Agriculture.

From the gorge’s exit, the road to the village of Sougia extends approximately 5 km and offers minimal shade, so arranging a transfer to Agia Irini gorge is recommended on hot days. Open throughout the year, the gorge charges a small entrance fee during the tourist season from April to October. This fee supports path maintenance, trash collection, and general upkeep, ensuring a pleasant experience for all hikers.

The Agia Irini gorge is home to the endangered Cretan kri-kri, or agrimi, and supports various microenvironments and habitats for numerous wildlife species. The area’s diverse flora includes trees like cypress, pine, maple, plane, oak, and holm oak, along with shrubs, brushwoods, and fine herbs such as dittany. Exploring this gorge offers a serene escape into nature’s beauty and biodiversity.

DIKTAMO GORGE TOUR

The gorge of Diktamos, also known as Katechori Gorge or Stylos Gorge, is located in the White Mountains. Starting 21km east of Chania near the village of Katochori at an altitude of 300m, it stretches 8km to the east, ending at the village Faragi, near Stylos in the province of Apokoronas, at an altitude of 40m.

This gorge features a stream that serves as the main tributary of the Kiliaris River, collecting water from the northern slopes of Mavri peak and emptying into Kalives beach. The gorge is lush with huge trees and many steep slopes where the endemic herb of Crete, dittany (or diktamos), thrives.

Hiking through the gorge can be challenging, requiring about 3 hours and attention to some tricky spots. Along the way, you can visit the old church of Apostle John (Agios Ioannis Theologos) in Stylos, cool off at the local springs, and restore your energy at the village taverns.
